Dr. Layton F. "Bing" Rikkers joined Surgery News in 2011 as Editor in Chief. After serving as chair of surgery at the University of Nebraska from 1996 to 2008, Dr. Rikkers was the A.R. Curreri Professor of Surgery and Chairman at the University of Wisconsin, where he is currently emeritus professor. Previously, he was Editor in Chief of Annals of Surgery, and he has served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Surgery, American Journal of Gastroenterology, British Journal of Surgery, Digestive Surgery, Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Journal of Surgical Research, Postgraduate General Surgery, and Surgery.

Dr. Rikkers is an ACS Fellow and has held leadership positions in numerous societies and organizations, serving as chairman of the American Board of Surgery and chairman of the Surgical Journals Editors Group. He has also been president of the Society of Clinical Surgery, the Halsted Society, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the Central Surgical Association, the Wisconsin Surgical Society, and the Society of Surgical Chairs. He is president-elect of the American Surgical Association.

Dr. Patrick V. Bailey is an ACS Fellow, a pediatric surgeon, and Medical Director, Advocacy, for the Division of Advocacy and Health Policy, in the ACS offices in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Peter Angelos is an ACS Fellow, the Linda Kohler Anderson Professor of Surgery and Surgical Ethics, chief of endocrine surgery, and associate director, MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, University of Chicago.

The Rural Surgeon

Dr. Peter Angelos
Dr. Philip R. Caropreso is an ACS Fellow, a general surgeon at Keokuk (Iowa) Area Hospital, and clinical professor of surgery at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He has practiced surgery in the rural communities of Mason City, Iowa; Keokuk, Iowa; and Carthage, Ill., for 37 years. He is vice-chair of the ACS Advisory Council for Rural Surgery.
